Every single aspect of the canoes is vital. Everything unnecessary was left out generations ago. The canoe is a teacher from our ancestry.
It’s my honor to be able to help create my ancestors canoes. I have learned how to take modern materials and create traditional lines, weight and colors. I use western-red cedar for important hand carved elements to incorporate the spirit and heart of the cedar tree, and remember the old way of carving them from one cedar log. Canoes are shaped and designed differently depending on their use, such as river and ocean. The canoe wagons that I make are much smaller and intended to help educate children about the importance of a way of life, building community, protecting and promoting clean water rights for all and connecting with tribal culture at their level.
